Gear Up For MLB Playoffs 2009

And Suddenly…We’re All Phillies Fans

New York Yankees Alex Rodriguez, Robinson Cano, Nick Swisher and Derek Jeter react after the game against the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim in game 1 of the ALCS at Yankee Stadium in New York

I’ve never seen such a huge bandwagon. And frankly, I’m happy to be on it.

I understand how Yankees fans feel, to an extent. I’m a Patriots fan, and the 2007 season was the greatest opportunity for smack talk of all time. Watching them steamroll every single opponent they came up against…watching Brady and Moss endlessly score TDs at will… it was exhilarating. Because you could talk whatever outrageous smack you wanted to anyone about any other team. And you knew your boys were going to win. You just knew it.

And everyone hated the Pats because of it. And their fans.

I understand how excited Yankees fans are. I’m a Red Sox fan too, and I recognize the disease because my team’s fans (and I) share the symptoms:  the intolerable cockiness; the endless, seemingly drunken, chants of “Derek Jeter” for MVP, despite at least a half dozen players who are more deserving; the bandwagon fans who jump on a winning team who couldn’t be bothered to watch that team slog through a miserable season; but the worst of it… the entitlement. Watching Yankees fans sidle up to the World Series like they have a 2 for 1 coupon at an All You Can Eat Buffet is scrotum wrenching.

And yet, that one dreaded word keeps all of us in check: Scoreboard.

There’s no denying it, no amount of refusal or 12 step programs, no amount of cursing with a Boston accent, no voodoo curses or santeria rituals are going to change anything.

*Gulp*… the Yankees are the best team in baseball.

And I dread this World Series. I’ve been able to say the Yankees haven’t won a thing in recent history. Their last trip to the World Series was 2003 when they gave it up to the Marlins. And they haven’t been the same since. The ‘04 ALCS gives Red Sox fans goosebumps just to think about it. And the Yanks have played like a bunch over paid egos ever since. A-Rod’s antics have made more of an impact on the media than the way they played on the field.

But not this year. The bloated payroll is more than paying off, and it’s especially poignant after their miserable start to the season. But the second half of this season, the Yankees play baseball like it’s fun. Like they enjoy being out there as a team.

And starting tomorrow night, they have another chance to add to all those rings that we endlessly hear about. No matter what team stat you want to talk about with a Yankee fan, you will inevitably hear “26 Rings”.

I hope the Phillies pitching is as crafty as I keep reading about. I hope the returning World Series champs are this year’s New York Giants. I hope Pedro Martinez can catch a foul ball against the side of his head.

Does anyone… anyone want the Yankees to win?

"Watching Yankees fans sidle up to the World Series like they have a 2 for 1 coupon at an All You Can Eat Buffet is scrotum wrenching."

This is easily the best setence I have ever witnessed in a sports article, I pretty much spit out my tea this morning while reading it.

I myself am not a Yankee of Phillies fan, Toronto despises both teams for numerous reasons. However, I picked the Yanks to win it all in spring training, therefore I have to stick with them through this series.

If the Yankees win it will be a testament to how much they spent and not how much of a team they are.

Sorry Dave. As much as I hate the Yankees, I gotta disagree. The payroll hasn't worked for them in almost ten years, so the money on it's own is not the reason. They're a great team...scoreboard.
  • I am so glad you used the word "entitlement" in this article. I have a few 'friends' who are yankees fans and had some pretty good arguments with them over the Twins-Yanks Series and Yanks-Angels series. The entire time I 'argued' with them and listened to their 'smack-talk', I couldn't get over their sense of entitlement, and no matter how many times I pointed this fact out to them in their choice of words and delivery, they'd bring up something else to argue against it, even though that 'new' argument even furthered my belief that they feel they are 'entitled'. I hate the Yankees and this is why. Derek Jeter for MVP? You've got to be f'n kidding me. I could list off about 25 guys who are more deserving for that award than him this season, with at least 3 or 4 of them from his own team. Anyway, thanks for letting me vent and bringing the 'entitlement' thing up.

I also attempted to argue with Yankees fans not too long ago, only to be put in my place, despite my attempts. While I tried to explain to them that the only reason the Yankees were a respectable team was due to the money they spent on free agents, I quickly learned all about how much talent they have on their roster that has been brought up through their farm system. I mean, it seems obvious when thinking about it, but the argument always falls back on the Yankees payroll. The fact is, however, that they have more home-grown talent that contributes on a daily basis which had made them so good...

God, I hate admitting that... especially considering the O's have been in last place for the past 240949851 years.
  • Tyson - I disagree (unless you're being sarcastic?), look at whats in their lineup and rotation:

    Damon - Red Sox Traitor.
    Teixeira - Texas Grown.
    A-Roid - Seattle/Texas Grown.
Matsui - never played in their farm system after coming over from Japan.
    Swisher - Oakland Grown.

Thats at least 2/3 rds of their regular lineup not native Yanks, then the rotation:

    Sabathia - Mercenary from Cleveland
Burnett - Mercenary from Toronto, brought up in Florida.

Thats a significant chunk of your regulars not originating or being developed from your own team (and leaves out some other players).

Native Yankees (off the top of my head):
    Jeter
    Posada
    Cano
    Hughes
    Chamberlain
    Petitte
    Rivera...

I don't know every Yank, but I look at my team (Twins), and the only contributors this year that never spent time in their farm system were Delmon Young, Pavano, O-Cab, Gomez, Harris, (does Crede count?) and some late season pickup relievers. They can say they have all this "homegrown talent" all they want, but in a way its a lie because they are not even close to other teams...More evidence of how Yankee fans overlook and mistate things to make themselves feel good about themselves, when I'd appreciate it and respect them a lot more if they just accepted the truth (and celebrated it) instead of glossing over and slanting the facts.

Can't we just dislike the Yankees because they're the Yankees? Who cares about the payroll? People dislike them because they win too consistently. It's all about envy. Name any other city in America, and I guarantee you that 90% of the nation would want a team who wins like the Yankees -- mercenaries and all -- even at the expense of that payroll. Everyone wants to explain their hatred by citing payroll or whatnot. It's okay to hate another team. To have an archnemesis. Sports wouldn't be fun without them. I don't care about their payroll (okay, maybe a little). I hate them. Period.
