Day three of the Major League Baseball playoffs was day three of major excitement for baseball fans, as the Minnesota Twins squared off with the New York Yankees in New York at New Yankee Stadium, while the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim hosted the Boston Red Sox.
Today I continue my “Stars” column, which I plan on contributing to throughout the entire MLB playoffs as often as I possibly can.
Yesterday I named one individual star per game for their outstanding postseason efforts.
Yorvit Torrealba, Adam Wainwright & John Lackey were the standouts yesterday for this writer.
Today I have made new selections.
Keep in mind this is my personal opinion only.
Minnesota Twins @ New York Yankees (New York leads Minnesota 1-0)
Alex Rodriguez & Mark Teixeira
Initially, it seemed as if this writer was going to have to name one of the starting pitchers as today’s star.
Minnesota starter Nick Blackburn and New York starter AJ Burnett were locked in a pitchers duel throughout most of yesterday’s contest, with Blackburn no hitting the Yankees over five and a third innings, while AJ Burnett only allowed two hits over the first five innings.
But, in this writer’s opinion today’s star will be that of a two-headed monster.
Yes, my star will be combined of two players in the form of Alex Rodriguez & Mark Teixeira.
With the game on the line late, with the Yankees trailing 3-1 in the bottom of the ninth inning, the Yankees faced one of baseball’s best closers Joe Nathan and Alex Rodriguez made an impact.
Rodriguez, who has been criticized for his lack of performance in a Yankee uniform during the postseason in the past quieted his critics on this night, launching a game tying two run home run to deep centre field off Nathan.
After he connected Rodriguez looked directly at his teammates in the Yankee dugout and signalled, “He’s got it”.
The excitement was not over for Yankee fans.
With the game entering extra innings and entering the eleventh inning Minnesota Twins reliever Jose Mijares was left in the game to force the hard hitting Mark Teixeira to bat right handed.

Mark Teixeira won the game with a big home run shot to left field.
The move did not pay off for Minnesota Twins manager Ron Gardenhire, as Teixeira hit what he described in a post game interview as a “wall scraper” of a home run into the left field stands for a 4-3 Yankee win and a 2-0 Yankee series lead.Boston Red Sox @ Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim (Los Angeles leads Boston 1-0)
Jered Weaver
For the second game in a row in this series the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim were graced with an outstanding starting pitching performance against an explosive Boston Red Sox line-up.
Similar to the performance of a night before by teammate John Lackey, Angels starter Jered Weaver completely shut down the Red Sox.
Weaver pitched seven and a third innings, allowing one earned run on two hits, walking two and striking out seven in one of his career best starts.
With the performance by Weaver the Angels offense did what they do best for the second night in a row, they manufactured runs by playing small ball.
The hit and run, stolen base offense was used masterfully by Angels coach Mike Scioscia leading this team to a 4-1 victory.
The Angels, who have had major problems with the Red Sox in past postseason series, are now taking a 2-0 series lead into Fenway Park, hoping to overcome the raucous Boston crowd and move onto the American League Championship Series.
Two playoff games were originally scheduled for tonight with the Philadelphia Phillies travelling to Colorado to play the Rockies @ 9:37pm EST, while the Los Angeles Dodgers look to sweep the St.Louis Cardinals in St.Louis @ 6:07pm EST.
Unfortunately, Colorado has been hit with a major snowstorm postponing today’s game.
Tracy Ringolsby of Fox Sports, a local Colorado Rockies writer and native of the area listed the conditions of the storm as:
“A fall storm has hit the Rocky Mountains. Roads north and west of Denver are closed. Snow continued to fall during the day Saturday, and the forecast was a sub-freezing temperature when first pitch was scheduled at 7:30 p.m., Denver time, on Saturday night.”
The game is being pushed to Sunday with a 10:07pm EST start time.
