Day four of the Major League Baseball playoffs took an odd twist as far as a scheduling standpoint.
Due to a snowstorm in Colorado, the Rockies and Philadelphia Phillies match up was postponed, moving to Sunday at 10:07pm EST.
This left only one game on Saturday night.
The Los Angeles Dodgers travelled into Busch Stadium to try and sweep the National League Central winning St.Louis Cardinals.
Today I continue my “Stars” column, which I plan on contributing to throughout the entire MLB playoffs as often as I possibly can.
Yesterday I named one individual star per game for their outstanding postseason efforts.
Mark Teixeira & Alex Rodriguez shared honours for New York, while Jered Weaver was the star for the Angels.
Today I have made a new selection.
Keep in mind this is my personal opinion only.
Los Angeles Dodgers @ St.Louis Cardinals (Los Angeles Dodgers lead 2-0)
Andre Ethier
The Cardinals were trying to overcome a dreadful game two loss to the Cardinals where the world witnessed a late inning fly ball botch by Cardinals left fielder Matt Holliday, followed by the meltdown of Cardinals closer Ryan Franklin in which the Dodgers came out the late inning winner on a ninth inning game winning single by the Dodgers Mark Loretta.
The Cardinals season ended on Saturday, as the Dodgers backed by an impressive pitching performance by Texas Rangers castaway Vicente Padilla moved onto the National League Championship Series for the second year in a row.
Even though Padilla was impressive (7IP, 4H, 0R, 0ER, 1BB, 4K) in his first ever postseason appearance, this writer’s star of the game goes to the hot hitting Dodger right fielder Andre Ethier.
Ethier was 3-5 in the game with a two run home run, a triple and a double and was one at bat away from the cycle, a feat tough enough to accomplish in the regular season, being unheard of in the postseason.
Ethier’s two run home run in the top of the third inning off Cardinals starting pitcher Joel Pineiro was a game changer.
The home run took the tenth man known as the Cardinals fans out of the game, allowing Padilla and the Dodgers bullpen to neutralize Albert Pujols, Matt Holliday and the rest of the Cardinals offense in front of a quiet, shocked St.Louis crowd.
The Cardinals had a great season in which they overcame critics who tabbed them as a fourth place finisher in the National League Central, as well as a big position change such as the move of Skip Schumaker from the outfield to second base, followed by a scary situation in which centre fielder Rick Ankiel was wheeled off the field after colliding neck first into the centre field wall early in the season.
Congratulations go out to the Dodgers on their series win, as they now await the winner of the Colorado Rockies/Philadelphia Phillies series.
The Major League Baseball playoffs will be in full force tomorrow, as the day begins with the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim travelling to Fenway Park to do battle with the Boston Red Sox at 12:07pm EST, followed by the New York Yankees visiting the whiteout effect known as the Metrodome in Minnesota to play the Twins at 7:07pm EST.
The final game on Sunday night showcases the Philadelphia Phillies braving the cold temperatures of Colorado as they visit the high altitude of Coors Field to battle the Rockies.
Pitching matchups below:
Los Angles Angels of Anaheim – Scott Kazmir @ Boston Red Sox – Clay Buchholz
New York Yankees – Andy Pettitte @ Minnesota Twins – Carl Pavano
Philadelphia Phillies – J.A. Happ @ Colorado Rockies – Jason Hammel
