Gear Up For MLB Playoffs 2009

Game 1 ALDS - Boston Red Sox at Los Angeles Angels

So I’m neither a Boston or Angel fan but I enjoy a good baseball game, and when the Sox play the Angels you know that is exactly what you’re going to get.  Well last nights game didn’t disappoint.  I strolled down to the local bar with my friend Brian a die hard Boston fan.  Now Brian and I live right in the heart of So Cal, so the bar of course is full of Angels fans.  Not to worry though because Angels fans aren’t really baseball fans, they’re jump aboard the bandwagon when the team is doing good fans.  So you know you won’t end up in a fight at the end of the night, because let’s face it they’re just not that passionate about their team.

The Red Sox had Lester on the mound and the Angels had Lackey, both really great pitchers so the question was who would last longer.  As the Angels came up to bat in the bottom of the ninth I leaned over and told Brian that I thought Lester was looking pretty good, to that his reply was “Just wait, this is when Lester starts to get in trouble”.  Sure enough that half of the inning is where the proverbial train fell of the track for the Red Sox.  Torii Hunter with two on men on sent Lester’s fastball just about the furthest I’ve seen a ball hit out of Angel Stadium triggering the explosion of fire works as the ball landed against the rock and waterfall facade in left center.  At that moment I heard Brian groan as he too knew this one was over.

Hunter crushed that ball. Also outstanding from last night's game: the first base umpire. If you watched the game, you know what I'm talking about.

So the excuse this year is "but the first base umpire"? What's with the but my crap... "but my Buckner", "but my labrum", " but my Japanese shoulder", "but my Papi not on roids" Scoreboard son. Caution: If you keep yapping, you might trip and smudge that pretty manicure or even worse break a nail.

Brian - CB Buckner was terrible at first last night, especially on that call in which Youkilis clearly had his foot on the bag ahead of the runner, but Buckner was not the reason the Sox lost.

Blame Lackey if you're going to blame anyone.

The Sox couldn't touch him last night.

Agreed! The Sox were out pitched last night. Pure and simple. BUT, the first base umpire was a COMPLETE joke, and he's behind the plate tonight. No excuses, but MLB needs a better selection process for playoff umpires.

Maybe Beckett will be given a few calls tonight to make up for it.

I still have Boston taking Game 2 tonight.

I just think Beckett is a big time postseason guy.

Which Beckett is going to show up the clutch Beckett, the Beckett that had a 7.22 ERA in April or the Becket that had a 5.03 ERA in August? Do you think his back is healthy now? Will he be able to be effective with his curve ball against the Angel line up? Dude has more ????? marks than the Riddler.

Being a Rays fan, you're an expert on taking it. Especially this year. You sure you're gonna have time to watch any games tonight? Joe Maddon needs his enormous head dyed a different color. Get to work.
